Blockchain and plagiarism
Proving authorship is a timestamp problem. Detecting reuse is a matching problem. Blockchain solves the first and is irrelevant to the second.
The two problems
Plagiarism disputes turn on who published first. That is answerable with a timestamp: a hash of the text, published to a chain at a known time, proves the text existed in that form by then. Finding copies of your work across the web is a completely different exercise requiring crawling and similarity matching.
Why hashing rather than storing
You publish a fingerprint, not the article. That keeps the content private, keeps the cost negligible, and still lets anyone verify later that a given text produces exactly that hash. It is an evidence mechanism, not a publication mechanism.
What a workable process looks like
- Hash the content on publish, including revisions
- Anchor the hash in a chain, or batch many hashes into one anchor
- Expose a verification page that recomputes and compares
- Keep an off-chain record linking hash to document and author
- Monitor the web for reuse separately, with similarity search
The limits
A timestamp proves existence, not authorship, and not ownership under law. It is evidence that strengthens a claim, not a substitute for one. Anyone can timestamp a text they did not write; what the chain adds is that later claims of prior authorship can be tested against a fixed record.
