Blockchain and copyright

How a content timestamp supports a copyright claim, and what it does not do.

The mechanics of the claim

Copyright exists from the moment of creation in most jurisdictions, so the practical question in a dispute is rarely whether a right exists but when the work was created and whether the version being compared is unaltered. A timestamp addresses exactly those two points.

What the evidence shows

What a timestamp can establish

What it does not show

Who wrote it. Whether the person who timestamped it held the rights. Whether the use by another party falls within an exception. A timestamp is one piece of evidence about timing and integrity, and it is a strong one for those two questions only.

Practical use

For publishers, the value is mostly preventive: the existence of a verifiable record discourages casual copying and shortens disputes when they happen. The certificate being visible on the page is doing as much work as the timestamp itself.

Keep the timestamp independent of any single vendor. If verification requires a specific company to still exist, it is not durable evidence.
